Key Insights from Task to Result

Task

KUNZMANN wanted to introduce robotic s into its operations, both to demonstrate automation capability and inspire trainees. The company required a solution that was easy to use and safe to operate, while remaining capable of real production work. When assessing the market, many traditional robot solutions appeared overly complex, with KUNZMANN instead seeking a simple yet powerful option.

Solution

The company selected a FANUC CRX-10𝑖A/L collaborative robot (cobot) with 10 kg payload and 1,418 mm reach. The control-independent robot integrates easily with the multi-vendor CNC systems available for use on the company’s machine tools. Programming takes place via the FANUC Tablet Teach Pendant using intuitive drag-and-drop functions, allowing trainees and operators to learn and deploy robotic tasks quickly.

Result

The FANUC CRX cobot now supports both practical training and production tasks. Trainees gain hands-on robotics experience using an intuitive interface, while the company demonstrates modern automation capabilities as part of its manufacturing operations. Safe collaborative operation and high repeatability ensure the robot can work alongside people while maintaining the precision required for machine-tending applications.

FANUC Cobot Inspires the Next Generation at KUNZMANN

For KUNZMANN Maschinenbau, the introduction of robotics was driven by both practical and educational goals. The German machine tool manufacturer wanted to demonstrate modern automation capabilities while providing trainees with direct exposure to industrial robotics.

“Our main focus is on the design and manufacture of hybrid milling machines, which users can operate using either CNC controls or manually with hand wheels,” explains Niklas Bitzer, Application Engineer at KUNZMANN. “Although production is a core activity, a large part of our remit centres on training.”

With robotics playing an increasingly vital role in manufacturing and the skills shortage proving particularly acute across Europe, the company looked to integrate automation technology into its training environment.

“We wanted a robot because it would not only demonstrate our prowess in this technology, but also because working with robots is fascinating for trainees,” he says. “Unfortunately, we soon hit a hurdle, discovering that many solutions on the market were just too complex.”

Fortunately, KUNZMANN’s ongoing search led the company to the FANUC CRX collaborative robot series, and specifically the CRX-10iA/L model. With a payload of 10 kg and reach of 1,418 mm, the robot offers flexibility for a wide range of automation tasks while remaining straightforward to deploy. Another key factor for Bitzer was compatibility.

“The CRX is control-independent, which means it can connect with any of the control systems we offer for use on our machines, supporting simple integration.”

Ease of use proved a decisive advantage. The CRX series takes advantage of the FANUC Tablet Teach Pendant, which features an intuitive drag-and-drop programming interface. Instead of writing complex code, users guide the robot manually and save positions directly on the touchscreen.

This simplicity makes the robot particularly suitable for training environments.

“Anyone can use it, even first-year trainees and interns,” he says. “That’s extremely valuable because it allows learners to gain experience with robotics right from the beginning.”

While the FANUC robot plays a significant role in education, KUNZMANN also had to ensure it could support real production processes. The CRX-10𝑖A/L meets this requirement with repeatability of ±0.05 mm, facilitating precision tasks such as machine loading and unloading.

“It was vital that the robot could operate as a fully-fledged production tool, not just a demonstrator for our trainees,” confirms Bitzer.

He concludes by highlighting the strong co-operation experienced during the project: “The collaboration with FANUC was perfect. No matter what questions we asked, we always received a speedy and comprehensive response. Moreover, the interaction between our PLC programming and FANUC worked exceptionally well. We would choose FANUC and the CRX again without hesitation.”

Success story about successful development of a mobile cobot with FANUC CRX-10iA/L. The Austrian company GER4TECH integrated the FANUC collaborative robot CRX-10iA/L into a Mobile Cobot G4T4.These Mobile Cobots can move autonomously between different workstations, transport materials and switch from one job to the next without any trouble. Thus G4T4 – Mobile Cobots enable new possibilities in handling and logistics automation. Their safety functions enable them to operate around people and capabilities of the G4T4 cobots are enhanced with a collaborative end-of-arm tooling (EoAT).
