FANUC Robots Optimise High-Volume Production at Nissan

Nissan Motor Ibérica started manufacturing in Barcelona in 1983 with the Nissan Patrol. One of three European production plants operated by Nissan, the mid-sized, ultra-competitive Barcelona facility has two production lines, each with capacity for six Nissan models. In total, the plant covers an area in excess of 500,000 m2.
Driving Car Production Excellence with FANUC Robots
The relationship between Nissan and FANUC began in 1990 with the Serena project, a large people carrier or small passenger van (minivan).
“Since then, the amount of FANUC robots here at the Barcelona plant has increased dramatically,” reports Oscar Sendra, Manager of the Body Maintenance Section at Nissan Motor Ibérica. Sendra’s responsibilities include ensuring the availability of all plant facilities, including robots, many of which work simultaneously to help maximise efficiency and productivity.
“We have more than 600 FANUC industrial robots working on the lines to help maximise efficiency and productivity,” he says. “We are using robots for production tasks that include welding, sealing and handling. We also use FANUC CNC systems.”

Among the different FANUC robot models at Nissan is the R-2000𝑖B/210F. Ideal for heavy handling at any angle, a single R-2000𝑖B/210F robot can lift entire chassis floor assemblies, for example. Offering a huge 210 kg payload and 2655 mm reach, numerous mounting options are available to make the best use of space and create an optimal work envelope.
Another common model at Nissan is the FANUC M-410𝑖B/700, which increases throughput in handling applications. This robot can lift up to 700 kg and provide reach up to 3143 mm. The M-410𝑖B/700 also features a hollow wrist to minimise the risk of cable snagging and reduce maintenance.
Several decades after installing the plant’s first FANUC robot, it is clear that these innovative programmable machines have become a central component of the facility’s manufacturing operations.
“Working with FANUC for many years has given us security and reliability in our production process,” concludes Sendra.
