FANUC Robot Raises Palletising Capacity at Flour Plant

Taking the strain in heavy lifting operations is a classic application for industrial robots. However, implementing robots in lifting tasks not only provides physical relief to workers, it also has the potential to boost throughput, even where space is limited. Flour manufacturer Lindmühle is a case in point, where FANUC simulation software highlighted the optimal robot for the available working envelope.
The milling company Lindmühle in Birmenstorf (CH) was looking for an automated solution where 5 to 25 kg bags of flour are stacked automatically in a visually beautiful way and each bag is weighed.

They are bagging 20-25 tons of flour every day, which were stacked on the pallets by hand until now. Their employees are relieved by this robot, it is less physically demanding and they were able to increase the bagging capacity, respectively the palletising capacity, to 35 tonnes. With the help of the robot, this capacity can be expanded even further.

The big challenge in the project was the (non-) available space. Not only the footprint but also the height of 2.90m. With the help of the ROBOGUIDE simulation software from FANC, they were able to simulate the most diverse robot options in the quotation phase, check the cycle time and then select the most suitable robot for.

In the progress of the project, they realised that an additional servo-controlled axis was necessary for clean depositing and stacking of the flour sacks. Since additional axes can be implemented very easily with FANUC, their programmers were able to put them into operation in very few hours.
