FANUC and Fujitsu Discuss Collaboration on Physical AI
FANUC Corporation has agreed with Fujitsu Limited ("Fujitsu") to begin discussions on potential business collaboration in the field of Physical AI. The objective is to accelerate the real-world deployment of Physical AI in industrial sectors, contribute to the realisation of a society where humans and robots coexist and collaborate, and enhance industrial competitiveness. While engaging in discussions with Fujitsu, FANUC will also utilise technologies from NVIDIA, a partner of both companies, to promote the adoption of Physical AI.
Background
In recent years, major challenges such as labour shortages caused by a declining birthrate and an aging workforce, a decrease in skilled workers, and intensifying global competition are increasingly being encountered in various industries, including manufacturing. To address these issues, expectations are growing for Physical AI, which enables AI to perceive the real world, analyse information, and execute actions in the physical environment.
Advancing Automation through Open Platforms and Physical AI
With Physical AI, robots and diverse types of equipment are able to understand the physical world, autonomously determine optimal actions, and execute them. This capability makes it possible to automate tasks, improve productivity, stabilize quality, and expand automation to new applications.
FANUC unveiled its Physical AI system based on an open platform at the International Robot Exhibition (iREX) last December. Following this debut, real-world deployment is increasing, such as operating robots with spoken instructions and autonomously performing parts kitting using AI agents. To further advance and spread Physical AI-driven automation throughout society, FANUC is exploring joint use with Fujitsu's AI infrastructure, which leverages high-quality data from the shop floor, in addition to combining advanced AI technologies and robot-control technologies.
Contributing to Real-World Deployment of Physical AI
By utilising open platforms, collaborating with Fujitsu, and benefitting from NVIDIA’s technologies, FANUC will contribute to the real-world deployment of Physical AI, the creation of a safe and prosperous society where humans and robots exist side-by-side and work together, as well as strengthening industrial competitiveness.
Comment by Takahito Tokita, Representative Director, President and CEO, Fujitsu Limited
We are delighted to begin exploring business opportunities with FANUC, a global leader in the robotics industry, toward the realisation of Physical AI.
We are confident that this collaboration between FANUC, with its world-class robotics technologies, and Fujitsu, with our strengths in computing technologies and software development, will create new industrial value.
By merging the technologies of both companies and seamlessly connecting robots, equipment, people, and business applications across the factory floor, we aim to optimise and enable autonomous operations across the entire manufacturing lifecycle, from production planning and manufacturing to quality management and maintenance operations.
Furthermore, by tightly integrating robots operating in the physical world with data accumulated and analysed in the digital world, we will contribute not only to improving productivity at manufacturing sites, but also to increasing operational agility and strengthening sustainable competitiveness in an ever-changing business environment.
With this initiative as a starting point, we will accelerate the real-world deployment of Physical AI and work together to enhance industrial competitiveness in the global marketplace.
