Task

For many machining operations, long chips are a problem. The stripes of coiled metal can wrap around the workpiece and the cutting tool and interfere with the proper operation of the machine tool. ETASIS, a Turkish producer of custom machine tools, wants to provide their customers with a solution that eliminates the long chip problem. These curly chips are especially problematic when lathing, but also can occur with other operations such as drilling and milling.

Solution

FANUC’s CNC provides a software application called the Servo Learning Oscillation Function. This function causes the tool to oscillate along the cutting direction. By applying Servo Learning Control, the oscillation is accomplished without compromising quality or accuracy.

Result

The Servo Learning Oscillation function enhances the quality of the finished product. Significant labour savings are achieved by avoiding the need to clean off parts. Ms. Günaltin goes on to explain how they utilize the function:

After the suitable cutting conditions of the workpiece are determined, the specified conditions are entered into the setting instructions of the Servo Learning Oscillation application and the function is ensured to run smoothly. We carried out R&D studies to determine the optimum values for the chip-breaking function.

We also use it for drilling and milling machines along with lathes. The FANUC Servo Learning Oscillation application eliminates the need for chip breaker equipment and for additional labor. It provides us with high benefits in terms of cost and time. In addition, this function extends the tool life, providing a significant cost reduction and efficiency in production.
