Man and Technology in Close Contact

The Cobot CRX-10𝑖A/L from FANUC makes it easy to produce reliably in the tightest of spaces. It has a compact design and significantly increases machine availability.
At Emerson Professional Tools AG, a FANUC CRX cobot operates efficiently even in confined production areas. The collaborative system ensures precise handling and smooth integration into the automated workflow, demonstrating how FANUC technology supports reliable and space‑optimized manufacturing environments.

Key Insights from Task to Result

Task

The existing portal automation solution on the CNC lathe was defective. Therefore, an immediately available and simple installable solution was sought.

Solution

With the Wick Slim Cell, which houses a FANUC CRX collaborative robot (cobot), an excellent solution was found with low space requirements and installation effort. In addition, the simple programming of the new CRX convinced the customer.

Result

The CRX automates the unloading of finished parts directly from the lathe and of residual parts from the bar feeder. Machine availability has been increased to 96% per day and productivity has been increased as a complete ghost shift can now be run.

Success story about automated part handling using FANUC robots by the Swiss company Emerson Professional Tools AG.

Emerson Professional Tools AG relies on the FANUC CRX collaborative robot to automate the unloading of finished parts directly from the lathe as well as remnants from the bar feeder. Thanks to its small footprint and easy installation, the CRX was the perfect replacement for the broken gantry system. Machine availability has increased to 96% per day, while productivity has been boosted by enabling a complete ghost shift.

With around 80 employees, Emerson Professional Tools has been developing, manufacturing and assembling pressing tools and pressing jaws for pressing fittings at its Swiss site in Sissach for decades. The company's high-quality products are primarily used for connecting sanitary, water and gas pipes in buildings.

Emerson Uses Space Saving Automation Through Collaborative FANUC Robot

As a leading manufacturer of press tools for building sanitary technology, Emerson Professional Tools AG must manufacture reliably and with process stability. For this reason - and due to the limited space available - the Cobot CRX-10𝑖A/L from FANUC has been used on a lathe since 2021. It has a compact design and increases machine availability to up to 96 percent.

In search of a suitable supplier, Stefan Rüdisühli, who is responsible for the management and further development of the site and therefore also for production, turned to the Swiss FANUC subsidiary. The reasons for this were, on the one hand, decades of good experience with FANUC controllers and, on the other hand, two FANUC robots that were already reliably in use.

At Emerson Professional Tools AG, a FANUC cobot works safely alongside an operator, supporting smooth interaction between manual tasks and automated handling. The collaborative setup enhances process reliability and maintains high productivity, even in dynamic production environments.

As a collaborative robot, the FANUC CRX-10𝑖A/L does not require any elaborate safety devices, which ultimately has a positive effect on its footprint. Fully complying with the safety standards according to ISO 10218-1 its sensitive sensors trigger an immediate safety stop if it touches an obstacle. The anti-trap protection and the soft rubber skin that partially covers the cobot also ensure that the machine operators feel safe and can work in close contact with their robot colleague without fear.

The FANUC cobot unloads finished parts from the Nakamura WTS-150 and removes remnants from the bar feeder. It can even perform an unmanned ghost shift. Thanks to the high process stability, the daily availability of the lathe was increased to up to 96 percent.

Plant Director at Emerson

The installation of the cobot and the initial programming of the tasks to be performed were carried out by experienced technicians from Wick AG. The system house from Küssnacht in Switzerland has been developing automation solutions for small and medium-sized companies for around 20 years.

Finished parts for pressing tools, unloaded from the lathe with a FANUC CRX cobot at Emerson Professional Tools AG.

Guido Lüönd, CTO of Wick AG, is particularly enthusiastic about the ease of installation of the new CRX series: "Thanks to its lightweight, compact design, the FANUC CRX-10𝑖A/L can be easily integrated into any work area or existing systems. We don't need a crane or any other lifting device." The new, particularly compact R-30𝑖B Mini Plus controller also fits in perfectly.

The automation expert is also impressed by the convenient programming options: "The FANUC CRX-10𝑖A/L enables Manual Guided Teaching. This means that the robot can easily be guided by hand to the desired positions, which can be saved on the tablet using the drag & drop function. This way, a new application is programmed in just a few minutes.”

Success story about successful development of a mobile cobot with FANUC CRX-10iA/L. The Austrian company GER4TECH integrated the FANUC collaborative robot CRX-10iA/L into a Mobile Cobot G4T4.These Mobile Cobots can move autonomously between different workstations, transport materials and switch from one job to the next without any trouble. Thus G4T4 – Mobile Cobots enable new possibilities in handling and logistics automation. Their safety functions enable them to operate around people and capabilities of the G4T4 cobots are enhanced with a collaborative end-of-arm tooling (EoAT).
